The following is Anna's obituary:

"Obituary - Mrs. Anna Smith

The subject of this brief sketch whose death is chronicled in another column, was born at Saw Mill River, now called Hall's Corners, or Elmsford, on the 12th of August 1790 [or 1?] and died at her residence corner of Broadway and Main street on Sunday morning last, having almost reached the ripe old age of four score and four years. Mrs. Smith was the oldest of eight children of Jane and Jacob Buckhout, five of whom survive her and three have passed away within the six months last past. Six months ago when all were living their combined age was five hundred and ninety-two years, making an average of seventy-four, an age to which few people and scarcely any whole families ever reach. Mrs. Smith passed her maidenhood and childhood at Saw Mill River until January 1812 when she was wedded to Martin Smith, and moved almost immediately to Tarrytown, then but a mere hamlet. In 1821, fifty three years ago, Mrs. Smith moved with her family to the corner of Broadway & Main street, where she resided until her death. She was the mother of six children, four of whom live to mourn her loss. Previous to her marriage, and over sixty years ago, she became a communicant of the Old Dutch Church, but at the death of her husband which occurred in September 1860, she removed her allegiance to the Second Reformed Church, of which she was still a regular attendant, until two years ago, when the weakness attendant upon old age, compelled her to remain at home, though it was with great reluctance and frequent expressions of regret that she ceased her attendance. Her life, as all who knew her can testify, was that of a consistent Christain, quiet and inoffensive, so much so, that in dying she leaves in all her acquaintance none but friends, and among them all not one an enemy, or one who can say aught except in praise of the quiet nature of her life. She leaves a circle of near relatives and friends who will sincerely miss her presence and who can never fill up completely the gap which her loss occasions. But in mourning her they can gather much comfort from the thought that their loss is her gain, that though they have lost a temporary comforter, she has gained everlasting comfort; that though the shadow of death has darkened, seemingly blighted their home, she has gained a home above, and rest in the bosom of the Great Master in whom footsteps she has been walking for seventy years."

George Pack, no location of origin indicated, found Ordnance Department, and his first land grant would have been in P329, he later removed (likely in abt. 1817 based on the above) to New York.

George is reported to have travelled as a civilian refugee (i.e. not a member of the Military) with unit 45 (most Refugee Loyalists arrived as part of a civilian Military Company) on the ship Mary to New Brunswick. He was enumerated as "1 adult male" on the ship (individuals counted shortly before sailing) and as "1 adult male" in May and June 1784 (from the victualling lists), at the settlement in St. John's.

This information is contained in Appendix VIII Alphabetized List of Refugee Loyalist Households: 1783-84 as found in D.G. Bell's "Early Loyalist Saint John: The Origin of New Brunswick Politics 1783-1786," New Ireland Press: Fredericton, NB, 1983, p. 228. According to the author, p. 172, the above is extracted from records at the "...Public Record Office, London, contained in WO60/33 pts1&2 (company musters at New York and passenger lists on board ship) and T1/609 (victualling lists as Saint John and in the lower Saint John Valley)."

George served as an Ensign in the First Battalion, Kings County Militia, New Brunswick in at least 1807. This was recorded in "The New Brunswick Militia Commissioned Officers' List 1787-1867," by David R. Facey-Crowther, Capital Free Press: Fredericton, NB, 1984, p. 142:

"PACK, George
Ensign 1 December 1807- (?)"

George's death is noted in his son's records, from the Mormon Church, "Temple Life of John Pack:"

225. Nancy Buckhout 456 was born on 11 Feb 1786 in New York, United States131 and died on 15 Feb 1874 in New York, NY, United States aged 88.

General Notes: This is a portion from the "Reminiscences of Mrs. Richard Lazier" an unpublished work written in August 1893, when she was in her 89th year. Nancy is mentioned by name in this memoir. Mrs. Richard Lazier was Anna Bookhout Appleby, a niece of Anna (Appleby) Bookhout, daughter of Thomas Dorland Appleby, Anna's brother:

"Father [Thomas D. Appleby] had two sisters, Anna, who married John Bookhout, lived on Walker Street, near the theatre on Bowery Street in New York City. Her family was two sons and two daughters. Nancy married Edward Story, an engraver..."

Nancy is listed as William Buckhout's sister in the "Coroner's Reports New York City, 1823-1842" abstracted by Kenneth Scott, published by the NY Genealogical & Biographical Society, 1989, p. 15:

"Bookhout, William - heart disease, b. New York State, age 44 or 45, carpenter by trade. Nancy King is his sister. (7 Sept. 1842)"

The latter date in the transcription is the date of the coroner's inquest.

In the full transcript of the record, it was noted that the Inquest was held at Nancy King's home at 224 Centre St., 14th Ward, New York City.

There is a Nancy King living in the 14th Ward, in the 1840 US Census. The enumerator indicated that she was living between "Hester to Grand [Streets]" which is exactly between where 224 Centre St. lies. So, assuming this is the same Nancy, her family includes 3 small children (1 male 10 < 15 yrs & 2 females 5 < 10 yrs) and herself (1 female 50 < 60 yrs).

In the next twenty years, Nancy is found living with differing family members. The 1850 US Census, Nancy King, age 63 yrs, is living with Perrine & Eliza Riggs, in Sodus, Wayne Co., NY. By the 1860 US Census Nancy King, has returned to New York City and is living with Gustavus A. Fuller and wife, Henrietta. They are in Ward 22, District 1.

The 1870 US Census has Nancy King, living with R.M. Harrington (who was also living with G.A. Fuller and family ten years earlier in the prior census) in 22nd Ward, New York City.

The following obituary appeared in the "New York Herald" newspaper on 16 Feb. 1874, vol. XXXIX, issue 37, p. 9, column 6:

342 F    i. Adeline A. Bookhout was born on 31 Mar 1821 in New York, NY, United States,618 died on 12 Aug 1844 in New York, NY, United States619,620 aged 23, and was buried about Aug 1844 in New York, NY, United States.477 The cause of her death was Consumption.

General Notes: Obituary Notice from the "New York Herald," Tues., August 13, 1844, vol. X, no. 22:

"On the 12th instant, after a lingering illness, Adeline A. Bookhout, eldest daughter of John & Eliza Bookhout, aged 23 yrs, 4 mos., and 12 days. The friends and relatives of the family are requested to attend her funeral this (Tuesday) afternoon, at 4 o'clock, from her late residence, No. 33 Mulberry St."

Extrapolating from this obituary, Adeline was likely born on March 31, 1821.

Adeline's death is also recorded in the Manhattan Death Register, 1795-1865, v. 14 as follows:

"Date of Decease: 1844 Aug. 12, Name: Bookhout, Adeline, Residence: 33 Mulberry, Age: 23 yrs 4 mos., Place of Nationality: NY, Disease: Consumption, Cemetery: Brick Ch., Sexton: J.S. Hunt [or Hart?]"

Adeline was originally buried in the Presbyterian Cemetery, located on E. Houston St., between Chrystie and Forsyth Streets, in Manhattan but was removed and reinterred in Cypress Hills Cemetery, Brooklyn, NY on Nov. 22, 1865. The Manhattan Cemetery was utilized by the First Presbyterian Church, the Brick Church and Rutgers Street Church for burial purposes. But, like many burials grounds in NY City, interments were banned after 1851, and the property became valuable for other purposes. Thus, the Presbyterian Cemetery property was sold in 1865.

The following is from "Gravestone Inscriptions from the Burial Grounds of the Brick Presbyterian Church" as appeared in the NYGBR, vol. 60, 1929, p. 8:

"The Brick Presbyterian Church was located on Beekman Street, between Park Row and Nassau Street, from 1768 to 1856. Surrounding it was a burial ground, where many members of the church were interred. When the property was sold, in 1856, the bodies and the gravestones were taken to Church Hill in Evergreen Cemetery; except such as were claimed by members of the family.

The Brick Church had also another graveyard on the corner of East Houston and Chrystie Streets. This was sold in 1865, and the bodies and stones from this yard were also taken to Evergreen Cemetery."

Adeline's mother, Eliza Bookhout, purchased Lot 149, Section 4 in Cypress Hills on June 26, 1865 and moved Adeline, her Aunt, Adeline Bookhout and Eliza's mother, Elizabeth Muston, all to the new location in November 1865.

+ 343 M    ii. Edward Bookhout was born in Feb 1823 in New York, NY, United States,621 died about 30 Dec 1910622,623 aged about 87, and was buried on 30 Dec 1910 in Westfield, Union Co., NJ, United States.622

344 F    iii. Elizabeth Buckhout was born between Feb and Jun 1825 in New York, NY, United States,624,625 died on 19 Nov 1827 in New York, NY, United States,626 and was buried on 19 Nov 1827 in New York, NY, United States.627 Another name for Elizabeth was Elizabeth Bookhout.

Death Notes: Elizabeth's death is recorded in the Manhattan Death Register, 1795-1865, v. 6 as follows:

"Date of Decease: 1827 Nov. 19, Name: Bookhout, Eliz'h, Residence: Orange St., Age: 2 yrs 5 mos., Place of Nativity: NY, Disease: Hives, Cemetery: St. Marks, Sexton: W.D. Disbrowe [sp?]"

Extrapolating from her death, she was likely born in June 1825.

Burial Notes: The following Burial Card from St. Mark's Church-in-the-Bowery in New York City indicates the following:

"St Mark's Church
Burial Card

Name: Bookhout Elizabeth
Date of Burial: Nov. 19, 1827
Age: 2 yr. 9 mo.
Place of Interment: Vault
Officiant: W. Creighton"

There is no indication which Vault Elizabeth was placed in and the Church has no further information. Her date of death, residence, cause of death and place of service were not completed on the card.

+ 345 F    iv. Anna Elizabeth Bookhout was born about 1828 in New York, NY, United States.628

+ 346 F    v. Susan A. Bookhout was born in Jun 1834 in New York, NY, United States,629,630 died on 2 Feb 1902 in New York, NY, United States631 aged 67, and was buried on 4 Feb 1902 in Brooklyn, Kings Co., NY, United States.631,632

228. Henry Buckhout was born between 1799 and 1800 in Dutchess Co., NY, United States468,469,470 and died between 1871 and 1881 in Ontario, Canada.471

General Notes: Henry was born about 1800 in either Dutchess Co., NY or New York City, as reported in various marriage and/or military records. The evidence is conflicting but most likely he was born near Fishkill, Dutchess Co., New York to parents John Buckhout and Anna Appleby. Certainly he indicates his parents as "John and Anne(a) Buckhout" in marriage records throughout his life and these were the only couple of that name in New York state having children in/about 1800. However, at this time, very little is known about Henry's early years. After his father's death in 1820, he appears to have briefly moved to NY City and is residing with other family members before leaving to go north into Ontario, Canada.

Henry is listed in "Longworth's 1822/23 NY City Directory" with his brother John as follows:

"Bookhout, John, carpenter, 81 Orange [Henry"

On p. 1 of the directory it states: "In the arrangement observed through this Directory, the christian names of those, where there are more than one of the same surname, are correctly alphabeted..."

It isn't clear exactly when Henry left New York City, or if he married there or further northward, but he is next found in a "Nominal List of the Inhabitants of Asphodel" which was a Muster Roll of men aged 16-60 years of Asphodel Township that was taken on April 19, 1822:

"Bockout, Hendry [sic] No. 3 Concession: 6 Lot No.: 4"

(Roger's Family Fonds; F533-1-0-23; Ont. Archives Film MS522)

Henry carries on finding work and laboring in the back townships of Newcastle District. He reappears in the Land Tax Assessment & local Census Records in Percy Twp, Newcastle District, Ontario in 1824 (Library & Archives Canada, Film M7745), as follows:

"Henry Buckhout, 2 milk cows"

Also, in the 1824 Census for Percy & Seymour Twps, List of Inhabitants, for Percy Twp, filed Apr. 13, 1824 as:

"Henry Beokhout [sic] and wife
2 M < 16 yrs; 1 M > 16 yrs; 1 F > 16 yrs; 4 total"

(Source: Trent University Archives, Peterborough, Ont., Ref. 84-021, Box 1, Folder 8). Very little else is known about Henry's first wife, other than the notation in the 1900 US Census for son Stephen Bookhout, residing in Jefferson Co., NY, which states that both is parents were born in "New York."

In 1825, for Percy & Seymour Twp Census, Newcastle District, Ontario:

"Henry Buckout
1 m > 16 yrs
3 m < 16 yrs
1 f > 16 yrs
Total = 5 members"

The third male child, born between 1824 and 1825, noted above has not been identified.

Henry then moved back to northern NY state by at least 1826/7 where he is found in the 1827 City Directory for Rochester, NY as a "householder" in the 5th Ward, on p. 10:

"Bookaut [sic], Henry, labourer, Andrews St."

According to the title page of the Directory it represents "..the names, residence and occupation of all male inhabitants over fifteen years of age in said village on the first of January, 1827..." The Directory listing is divided into two parts; those that represent "householders" and those that are "boarders." The move back to Rochester fits with information about Stephen Bookhout, one of Henry's sons, whose birth was in June 1827 in "New York" (as noted in the 1900 US Census).

In the 1829 "Rochester Daily Advertiser & Telegram" Henry is found in a listing of those for whom "Letters [are] Remaining in the Post Office at Rochester November 1st, 1828."

Henry enlisted in the US Army at Rochester, Monroe Co., NY on Feb. 14, 1829 and deserted one month later. The entry in the Register of Enlistments reads as follows:

"Bookhout, Henry, age 29 yrs, 5' 7", grey eyes, light hair, light complexion, born Dutchess Co., NY, Occupation: Mason, enlisted for 5 yrs on Feb. 14, 1829 at Rochester, NY by Lt. Pendleton, 2 Inf. D., Deserted: March 21, 1829"

(Source: "War Department, Register of Enlistments, US Army, 1798 - 1914," RG94, Film M233, vol. 38, p. 14, entry #43)

Henry's enlistment papers also include his actual signature (in two places), and that he was paid a bounty of $6 for joining the service for a "period of five years."

Thus, Henry was in the Rochester area from, at least, early 1827 until the end of March 1829. Possibly as a result of his desertion from the military, Henry, and his family, moved westward to Buffalo and back into Ontario again in the following years.

The following information chronicles the Bookhout family moving from NY state into Canada. This is a portion of an email from Polly Bookhout (great-granddaughter of Stephen Bookhout) dated Feb. 27, 2001:

"America of the Frontiersmen's Sons"
Excerpts from an unpublished paper by Russell Bookhout

"Somewhere in the Rip Van Winkle country of the Katskills there may be a village where most of the inhabitants are of my family name. It may be only a folktale, however, for it was years ago that my grandfather [Stephen Bookhout] told me of it, and his parents left it when he was a baby.

When my great-grandfather, his wife and two boys left eastern New York, they moved by oxcart into the wilderness south of where Buffalo now is. When store goods were needed, or a letter had to be posted, they two children were left with a nearby tribe of Indians where they lived happily until a few weeks later their parents returned behind the ox-team from the nearest trading post. My father [Levi Bookhout] was born across the line in Ontario while my grandfather was helping lumber off that province and quite a bit later, and many hundred miles farther west, my two brothers and I were born on a Wisconsin farm. In each generation, some, like my father, settled down. Like his brothers, I didn't, nor have I yet."

Information from Polly Bookhout on her research trip to Salt Lake City in March 2001:

"My first advisor was very pleased with the Ontario census records you've discovered and with my ggrandfather's story of travelling through New York state to an area south of Buffalo. She said, "Of course, the Genesse Trail." Later, I saw maps of this and other trails west, along with chapters about this area in Lockwood Doty's "History of Genesse Country.""

Henry reappears in the Percy Township, (then Newcastle District) Northumberland Co., Ontario Assessment Records in 1833 with a milk cow, a wife and 2 sons less than 16 years of age. It does not appear that he owns any land, but is more likely a laborer. The land owner immediately preceding his name in the register is Jacob Bull, Concession 3, Lots 12 & 13.

Henry and family continue living in Percy Township for a number of years. In the 1836 Assessment records, there is an entry of "Stephen Bookhout," again immediately after Isaac Bull, Concession 3, Lot 4. The same four family members are indicated. Is it possible that this is also Henry? Maybe his middle name was Stephen, or the enumerator made a clerical error and confused Henry with his son, Stephen (who would have been about 9 yrs old at the time)? This reference to a Stephen Bookhout does not appear again in the Percy Assessment records from 1808 to 1847.

By the 1837 Percy Assessment records, Henry is directly following George Zufelt, Concession 5, Lot 12 East. The family still consists of Henry, wife and two sons under 16 years of age but no property is indicated. However, in the 1838 Percy Assessment records, Henry is finally listed on a piece of land: Concession 5, Lot 12 with 20 acres under cultivation and 80 acres uncultivated. As well, he now has two milk cows. It is possible that he purchased the property from George Zufelt. In addition, the family has grown to include 2 males > 16 years, 2 females > 16 yrs and 2 boys < 16 yrs. Is it possible that another couple have temporarily joined the family? It is impossible for Henry and his wife to have had another son and daughter (now > 16 yrs) in the time period.

The Percy Twp Census records in March of 1839, show Henry once again with 2 boys less than 16 yrs of age and presumably a wife (female > 16 yrs). This census also indicates the family belonged to the Church of England. In most other instances, Henry and his family members are shown as Episcopal Methodist.

Henry then moves closer to Lake Ontario and appears in the Cramahe Township Census records in April of 1840 with the same four family members in his household (1 wife and 2 sons under 16 yrs of age). This first wife's name is still unknown, but from later records his sons are identified as Levi & Stephen Bookhout. Henry is not listed in the 1841 Cramahe Twp Census or 1841 and 1842 Land Assessment records.

On Oct. 15, 1843, Henry married Agnes Nancy (Miller) Milligan, widow of Robert Milligan. His first wife passed away sometime prior to this marriage. Henry and Agnes' first child, Henry (Harry) was born about 1844 and Adeline followed in 1845/6.

From the 1844 Assessment Records for Cramahe Twp, Henry and family appear living on Lot 5, Concession 4, northeast part. At this time, Heny has one acre under cultivation and the family has one milk cow. The total assessed value was £4. This is the same property that Robert Milligan and his wife were living on prior to his death. It is likely that Henry & Agnes remained on this property after their marriage.

On May 27, 1844 Henry's son, Levi, from his first marriage, died accidently near the Common School house in the 4th Concession, Cramahe Twp, when he fell off a two wheeled carriage hauling a timber log and was run over by one of the wheels. He died almost immediately afterwards.

In 1845, the family is still living on the same property but it is indicated as just the "eastern" part. In 1846, the same lot and concession are indicated but the part is now showing as "mid." In these later instances, the family still has only one acre under cultivation with one milk cow. The 1847 Assessment Records do not list any property for Henry, but he is shown as having one "square or hewn log house < 2 storey" assessed at £20.

Henry Bookout appears in the 1848 Cramahe Twp census records as a laborer and proprietor of land. The family was living on Lot 4, Concession 3 with a number of other families. Obediah Simpson and Wilmot Wells are also recorded as proprietors of land for the same concession and lot. Henry owned "1 neat cattle" and the farm produced 30 lbs of maple sugar.

Sometime around 1849, Henry and Agnes had another son, named Charles.

By the 1850 Cramahe Twp census, Henry Bookout had moved to Lot 4, Concession 4. He is shown as a 'non proprietor' of land with a family of six. Likely as follows:

1 male married 40 and not 60 yrs = Bookhout, Henry
1 female married 40 and not 60 yrs = Bookhout, Agnes [implying she was born abt. 1810; given we know she had a final child in Feb. 1851]
1 male 10 and under 14 yrs = Bookhout, ? [unknown son, or possibly John M. Milligan, son of Agnes' first husband, Robert Milligan?]
1 male 5 and under 10 yrs = Bookhout, Henry [aka Harry]
1 female 2 and under 5 yrs = Bookhout, Adeline
1 male 1 and under 2 yrs = Bookhout, Charles

In addition to the above, the family had 1 "neat cattle" and their farm produced "20 yards of flannel or other unfulled cloth."

Stephen, Henry's eldest living son from his first marriage, married in February of 1850 and is living with his wife, Phoebe, in Brighton Twp, Northumberland Co., Ontario. On February 7, 1851, Henry and Agnes had their last child, Robert Emmerson Bookhout.

The 1852 Cramahe Assessment, shows Henry Bookout [sic] as a "freeholder" [unproven] of land living on Lot 14 of Concession 3. The real property was valued at 10£, his personal property at 3£, for a total of 13£. The tax due was 2d. A further General School Tax of 2d, Town/Township rate of 2d, and Lunatic Asylum levy of 1d was applied. His total tax burden for 1852 totalled 9d.

In 1861, Henry Buckout is listed as a 61 yr old laborer, widower, in the Cramahe Twp, Northumberland Co., Ont. Census, taken on the evening of Jan. 13, 1861. In the same census, Henry's son, Henry Jr., is listed as "male family member absent" with an estimated age of 16 yrs, placing his birth in 1844. Other children shown in this census are: Adaline aged 15 yrs, Charles aged 13 yrs [? hard to decipher] and Robert aged 9 yrs. Henry married again in March, 1861 to Mary Ryckman, daughter of Edward & Mary (Zufelt) Ryckman. In the marriage register he lists his birthplace as the "United States" and his parents as "John & Anna." So, his wife Agnes has to have passed away by Jan. 13, 1861, the date the census was taken.

Henry married once again on February 5, 1864 to Abigail Ryckman. They had a daughter, Annie [possibly Annie Mary?] born Nov. 9, 1863 likely in Cramahe Twp. In the registry information for this final marriage, Henry indicates his birth place as "New York City" with parents "John & Anne," and his age as 61 yrs. Henry's last appearance in the Canadian Census records is in 1871 in Cramahe Township where he is living with Matthias McCoy's family as a 71 yr old widower. This final census record also shows Henry as born in the United States and Episcopal Methodist. Interestingly, his origin is first written as "American" and then crossed out and "German" is written above it. The daughter, Mary, aged 6 years is living nearby with Joseph & Amanda Cunningham.

The spelling of this surname varies from: Boeckhout, Boekhout, Buckhout, Bookhout, Brokhout, to Buckout etc. It appears to have been recorded inconsistently.

General Notes: Charles' year of birth may have been about 1848 or 1849. The 1861 Cramahe Twp, Northumberland Co., Ont. census indicates he would be 13 (but very hard to decipher) on his next birthday.

In 1866, Charles is found in the "Calendar of Prisoners for Quarter Sessions September 1866" for the Common Jail in Cobourg, Ont. with his step-brother Stephen as follows:

Hopkins & Co., London in 1928, p. 209-214:

"Another New Brunswick letter-of-marque which had a colourful career under the Stars and Stripes before hoisting the Red Jack was the 'Snap Dragon' of St. John. The name is spelled in two words in her original papers. She began as a North Carolina cruiser, and is credited with having captured two British barques, five brigs and three schooners. Many of these vessels she burned at sea. One of her prizes, the brig 'Ann,' is said to have had a cargo of dry-goods worth half a million dollars; a statement to be accepted with some hesitation. Eighteen owners, one of them being Increase Bradley, of Newbern, N.C., fitted the 'Snap Dragon' out again for privateering in May, 1814, and sent her to sea under a new commander, Capt. William Richards Graham, of Virginia..."

The 'Snap Dragon' encountered two ships on the day she was captured by the British. First, the 'Osbourne,' an English packet-ship of 463 tons, which sent two 9-pound shots into the 'Snap Dragon's side and caused her to veer course away to plug the holes. Later, that same day, she encountered the 'Martin,' a British cruiser gun-brig. "She made short work of the 'Snap Dragon.' She could outsail her, and she was much too heavy to the 'Snap Dragon' to fight. So down came the young Virginian captain's colours... The 'Snap Dragon' was sent into Halifax as a prize, and Messrs. Curry and Hanford, of St. John, N.B., bought her on condemnation.

As an American privateer she had carried one 12-pounder and five 6-pounder guns, and her crew numbered eighty. Her American measurement was 147 tons. In her British warrant she is described as of 160 tons - there being often differences in measurement between British and American surveys. John Roy, and the obliging Samuel Cunard, of Halifax, who was also bail for the St. John privateer 'Dart,' were her bondsmen. Capt. James Reid, formerly of the New Brunswick privateer 'Hare,' and an early lighthouse keeper in St. John, was her master. William Buckhout was named as lieutenant or mate, and she reported a crew of theirty men, as a British letter-of-marque -- and a musket and a cutlass for each..."
