General Notes: The following excerpt is from "The Settlers of the Beekman Patent" Dutchess County, New York (an historical and genealogical study of all 18th C. inhabitants of the Patent) by Frank Doherty, vol. II, 1993, chapter 77 "The Bookout Family," p. 641 - 643:

"John BOOKHOUT was born in Bushwick ca. 1713 and removed to Fishkill by 1744 (poss. 1742, see land information below) when he was taxed there. On 28 May 1755 he purchased 317 acres from Abraham Lefferts, merchant of the city of NY. This acreage was the northern part of lot 2, Rombout Patent; "Beginning at the Hudson River running to the line between the heirs of Andrew Teller, deceased, and the Courtland's; to the land of Philip Ver Planck, Esq; to the Wappingers Creek and back to beginning." The price for the land was £130. This land had been conveyed to John Bookout and William Barnes on 18 Aug. 1742. [Mortgage filed in Dutchess Co. 1:41]

John and Peter Boukout (prob. his brother) were taxed together in Rombout in 1755 and 1756. He may have lived at Poughkeepsie in 1753 and 1754 where a John Bookout Jr. was taxed."

The following is from a list of tax-payers of the original town of Fishkill, Dutchess County, NY as published by the Dutchess County Historical Society:

"Bookhout, John; 1744-1748, 1753, 1754, 1757-1763, 1765-1770
Bookhout, John Jr.; 1745-1748
Bookhout, John and Peter; 1755, 1756
Bookhout, Peter; 1757-1763, 1765-1769
Bookhout, Estate of Peter; 1770"

Source: "Eighteenth Century Records of the portion of Dutchess County, New York that was included in the Rombout Precinct and the original Town of Fishkill," collected by William Willis Reese, President of the Dutchess County Historical Society and edited by Helen Wilkerson Reynolds, from Collections of the Dutchess County Historical Society, Vol. 6, 1938.

The above information seems to indicate the John, his brother Peter and their father, Johannes Buckhout, all moved to Fishkill, in Rombout Precinct, Dutchess County. It is also possible that the father passed away sometime between 1748 and 1753, when John Bookhout is not referenced as "Jr." and could be "John Bookhout" himself. Certainly, this is implied by 1755 when what appears to be the same property [given the same neighbours and valuation of the property] is in the Assessment Records under the name of "John & Peter Buckhout."

Dutchess Co. Ancient Court Records and Land Records between at least 1758 and 1761, indicate John's wife was named Ann but confirmation of her identity, and whether she was the mother of all his children, is still speculative.

From the "List of Roads" abstracted in "Eighteenth Century Records of the portion of Dutchess County, New York that was included in Rombout Precinct and the original Town of Fishkill," edited by Helen Wilkinson Reynolds, Dutchess Co. Historical Society, Vol. VI, 1938, p. 252:

"1703, June 19. "Laws of the Colony of New York," vol. 1, p. 532, chapter 131. Act for the laying out, regulating, clearing and preserving of public, common highways throughout the colony. The Act provided for a road that should extend from King's Bridge, Westchester County, northward through Westchester, Dutchess and Albany, and which should be at the least four rods wide, English measure.

Although the ways to be laid out in Dutchess were to be at least six rods wide, the county was not to be obliged to clear or maintain any other path or highway than for horse and man only."

From the same book, there are two references to Johannis Buckhout, in the "List of Roads" as follows:

p. 253 - #64

"1757, May 24. Road Book C [1755-1788; records of the Clerk of Dutchess Co.], p. 9. Report made by Henry Terbos and Ezekiel Masten, commissioners, Rombout Precinct, that they have laid out the following road.

Beginning at Johannis Bookhouts house ---- to a chestnut saplin ---- thence all along the marked trees --- till it comes (on) the Road that Gose from Var Plancks storehouse ----- the same Road to be two rods wide, all along the Wopings Criek."

p. 254 - #102

"1773, April 5. Road Book C, p. 133 Report made by Peter I. Monfoort and Zebulon Southward, commissioners, Rumbout precinct, that by request they have laid out a road as follows.

Beginning from the road that leads from Mr. Philip Ver plancks Store House to the House formerly belonging to Johannas Bouckhout, deceased, --- from that road to the Store house of Daniel Weisbergh --- to be two rods wide."

John's will is found in NY County, NY Wills, Libre 27, p. 553 under "Bockhout, Johannis, Mar. 4, 1771." It was written 20 Aug. 1770 and proved Feb. 11, 1771:

[Note: I have tried to remain as true as possible to the actual spelling in the document]

In testimony whereof I have caused the Perogative Seal of the Province of New York to be hereunto affixed at the City of New York the fourth day of March one thousand seven hundred and seventy one."

It is interesting to note in the latter document the following statement:

"Whereas the said Johannis Bockhout in his lifetime made his last will and testament in writing bearing date the twentieth day of August last and thereby appointed John Cooke and Joseph Thurston Executors thereof and soon after died..." This would seem to indicate John likely died in August or early September 1770.

A bit of history about Rombout Precinct and Fishkill settlement:

The territory constituting the South Ward included the present Putnam County, New York (set off from Dutchess in 1812). It extended from the boundary of Westchester County northward to a line between Hudson's River and the Colony of Connecticut. That line began at the river at the mouth of the Wappingers Creek and ran inland due east.

When wards were abolished and precincts laid out, Rombout precinct (at first called "the Fishkills") was created. It did not include the area which is now Putnam County, but conformed very nearly to the boundaries of the tract of land, title to which was covered by the Rombout Patent. Rombout Precinct was equivalent to the area now divided into the towns of Fishkill, East Fishkill, Wappinger and the west half of the town of La Grange.

Noted events in his life were:

• Residence: Between 1742 and 1744, Fishkill, Dutchess Co., NY, United States. 134

• Residence: Between 1745 and 1770, Fishkill, Dutchess Co., NY, United States. 237

• Probate: 11 Feb 1771, Fishkill, Dutchess Co., NY, United States. 238

John married Ann.239 Ann died between 14 Apr 1761 and Aug 1770 in Fishkill, Dutchess Co., NY, United States.239

Children from this marriage were:

   111 M    i. Peter Buckhout 240 died after 20 Aug 1770.241

General Notes: Peter was likely a witness at his cousin's baptism (his father's brother was Peter Buckhout, the father) along with his sister Hester (then unmarried):

"New Amsterdam Reformed Dutch Church (New York City)
Feb 19, 1752; Pieter Boekholt, Sara Gardenier; Johannes; witnesses: Petrus Boekholt, Hester Boekholt, j.d."

On May 30, 1768, Pietor Boeckhout, of Rumbout Precinct, conveyed seven acres, two rods and thirty two perches, to Isaac Viele of Rumbout Precinct, for the sum of £50. It is noted that this parcel was adjacent to land in the possession of William Barrance. (Source: Original Deeds, Libre F. p. 247, Town of Fishkill, Rumbout Precinct, Dutchess Co., NY)

Peter married Jean on 2 Nov 1755 in Rumbout Precinct, Dutchess Co., NY, United States 134,242.,243

+ 112 F    ii. Hester Buckhout 244 died after 1808.

113 M    iii. Jacob Buckhout .245 Another name for Jacob is Jacobus Buckhout.

General Notes: There is a Jacob Buckhout found in the Enlisted Men for the Second Regiment (Land Bounty Rights), Dutchess Co., NY Militia under Capt. John Brinkerhoff, Capt. Brown and Capt. John Bunschoten (from the book "NY in the Revolution as Colony & State" p. 240). He is in the same Regiment is Asa & George Elsworth. The land bounty rights was offered by government in 1781 as the demand for men to serve continued to increase and this was felt to be an effective incentive to enlist.

There is also a Jacob Buckhout mentioned as a defendant in the Ancient Court Documents of Dutchess Co., NY File #10594, Court of General Session Minutes, dated Oct. 14, 1783, held at Poughkeepsie. However, no further details are provided to indicate whether this is the same Jacob Buckhout, son of John.

   115 F    v. Nancy Buckhout .247

116 M    vi. Abraham Buckhout 248 was born about 1730.249

"Abraham BOOKOUT was born ca. 1730 and was first taxed in Beekman in 1753 at 1 pound. He settled on lot 11 of the Poughquaq purchase on a farm of 190 acres. The settlement date was 1751 with first rents of 21 bushels due 1754. ["Livingston Rent Book," NY Historical Society, p. 103]

Abraham seems to have left the farm by 1759 when he disappeared from the Beekman tax lists. Jurrey Emigh was next on the farm and paid 17 pounds, 6 shillings, 6 pence for back rents on 1 May 1760. Emigh left by 1765 when it was re-let to Joseph Sexton. There are no other records for an Abraham Bookout at all except for a census listing in Yorktown, Westchester Co., in 1790 1-4-6. However, this listing was between Mathias and Daniel Bookout and was probably for Abraham, son of Matthys and Elizabeth (Martine) Bookout."

The Dutchess Co., NY Tax Lists record Abram Bookhout living in Beekman Precinct as follows:

Feb. 1753, Abram Bookhout, value: 1£, tax amount: 0.0.5
June 1754, Abram Bookhout, value: 2£, tax amount: 0.1.8 [?]
Feb. 1755, Abram Bookhout, value: 2£, tax amount: 0.1.10
June 1755, Abram Bookhout, value: 2£, tax amount: 0.3.0

June 1756, Abram Bookhout, value: 1£, tax amount: 0.1.8
June 1757, Abram Bookhout, value: 1£, tax amount: 0.1.8

He does not appear in the 1758 or subsequent tax listings for Dutchess Co., NY.

This could imply that Peter, his brother John, and his father John, all moved to Fishkill, Dutchess County, NY.

Noted events in his life were:

• Residence: Between 1755 and 1770, Fishkill, Dutchess Co., NY, United States. 256

General Notes: Jane (or Jannetje) is mentioned in numerous court and land records relating to property owned by her deceased husband, Peter Buckhout, who died about 1769.

In the "Dockets of Declarations" for Dutchess Co. court records, she is listed as follows:

"March 23, 1771: John Cooke vs. Jannetie Bookhout Ex'x.. Def. in case.. Js. Livington"

Noted events in her life were:

• Baptism Location: Old First Dutch Reformed Church of Brooklyn, 18 May 1719, Brooklyn, Kings Co., NY, United States. 258

Children from this marriage were:

+ 119 M    i. John Buckhout 260 was born between 1750 and 1760 in Fishkill, Dutchess Co., NY, United States261 and died on 13 Oct 1819 in St. John, NB, Canada.262

+ 120 F    ii. Elizabeth Buckhout died on 19 Jan 1842 in Milan, Dutchess Co., NY, United States.257

51. Johanna Buckhout was born in Bushwyck, Kings Co., NY, United States.

General Notes: While there is no direct evidence that Johanna is the daughter of Johannis & Esther (Hester) Buckhout, the circumstantial information seems to support the relationship.

Johanna & Adrian Van Ende appear in Bucks Co., PA baptising their daughter, Hester, on Aug. 1, 1742. The couple then reappear in Fishkill, Dutchess Co., NY in 1746 where they baptise their son, Johannis, on June 15th. Coincidentally, around the same time (about 1742), that Johannis Buckhout and his sons had also moved to the Fishkill area.

Adrian also appears in the Land Deed records for Dutchess Co., NY.

Johanna married Adriaen Van Enden, son of Paulus Van Enden and Jannetie. Adriaen was born before 1712 in Bushwyck, Kings Co., NY, United States263,264 and died about 1792 in Dutchess Co., NY, United States.264

General Notes: Adrian was born most likely before 1712 in Bushwyck, Kings Co., NY. He and his brother, Hendrick, were witnesses to the will of David Sprough, of Bosswyck [sic], Kings County, NY written Oct. 23, 1731 and proved May 15, 1739.

Adrian and his wife, Johanna, baptised one child in Pennsylvania and then settled, by at least 1743, in Dutchess Co., NY. Adrian is found in the Tax Lists for Rumbout Precinct from 1743/44 to 1746/47 on property valued at £1 to £2. In the first instance, likely Feb. of 1743/44, he is found living near to his father-in-law, John Bookhout.

Adrian was in Poughkeepsie Precinct, Dutchess Co., NY by at least March 27, 1750 when he is referenced in a land conveyance between John Maxfield and John Bookhout Jr. (his brother-in-law) as follows:

John Maxfield of Poughkeepsie Precinct in Dutchess County in the Province of New York, Gentleman, and Elizabeth, his wife, conveyed to John Bookhout Junior of Rumbout Precinct in Dutchess County in the Province of New York, Blacksmith, in consideration of the sum of Two Hundred and Fifty Pounds… "all that Certain Tract or Parcell of Land situate lying and being in Poughkeepsie Precinct in Dutchess County (being part of a Tract of Land called the Fifteen Hundred Acres) Beginning at Robert Churchill's southerly corner of his land being a heap of stones lying on a Ledge of Rocks, thence along said Churchil's Line north Forty degrees West Eighty two chains fifty Links to said Churchill's Northwesterly Corner and also a Corner of Roeloff Ostrum's Land thence south Sixty one Degrees west five chains Twenty Nine links to a heap of Stones then North Eighty Two Degrees West Two Chains thirty links to an Elm Tree Being the Eastermost Corner of Adriyaen Van Ende's Land..."

Examined Nov. 1, 1750 H. Livingston, Clerk & Recorded Aug. 30, 1750. (Source: Libre B(2), Land Deeds, Dutchess Co., p. 307-309).

He was subsequently the subject of this land transaction, also written on Mar. 27, 1750. John Maxfield of Poughkeepsie Precinct in Dutchess County in the Province of New York, Gentleman, and Elizabeth, his wife, conveyed 195 acres to Adrian Van Enden, of Rumbout Precinct in Dutchess County in the Province of New York, Cordwainer, in consideration of the sum of Two Hundred and Fifty Pounds…

(Source: Land Deeds, Dutchess Co., NY, Libre 2, p. 310-312)

Adrian signed with his mark "A" as a witness to his brother-in-law, Simon Flageler's will, in Charlotte Precinct, Dutchess Co., NY on Nov. 29, 1774.

Adrian is then found in Poughkeepsie Precinct tax lists, living adjacent to two brothers-in-law, John Bookhout Jr., and James Glean in Feb. 1754. He continues to reside there through at least 1763 based on subsequent tax information (and likely longer).

Peter Prindle, a descendant, wrote "Van Anden - Van Enden Family" in 1980, a copy of which is in the Family History Library in Salt Lake City. In this compilation, he indicates mention of Adriaen and his family as noted in Stephen Van Anden's Bible*, 1851, records as follows, p. 44:

"Family Records

*The author writes in the Foreward that "The entries in the family record section were made in a beautiful hand by Stephen's son Horace Gilbert Van Anden, born 17 July 1815."

Noted events in his life were:

Johannis married Sarah Van Wagenen.

52. Susanna Buckhout 136 was born about 1718 in Bushwyck, Kings Co., NY, United States.

Susanna married George Elsworth.11

General Notes: George & Susanna Elsworth baptized at least four of their children at the New Amsterdam Reformed Dutch Church in New York City, between the years 1742 and 1750.

They were also the witnesses at the baptism of Willem Teller in the same church:

"1751 July 10; Willem Teller, Annatje Elsworth; Willem; Joris Elsworth, Susanna Boukhout syn h.v."

At some point, they began investing in Dutchess Co., NY where Suannah's father and brothers had moved to in 1742. They appear in land & tax assessments records there from about 1760.

Recorded on 4 Oct. 1742, George Ellsworth's Mill is mentioned in the laying out of Highways in Beekman Precinct as found in "Old Miscellaneous Records of Dutchess County (The Second Book of the Supervisors and Assessors)," published by Vassars Brothers' Inst., Poughkeepsie, NY, in 1909, p. 176 as follows:

"Also A Road from Mathews Buis his house at Oswego to Run long the Road that Now is to And Along the houses of Johannis Dalson Jacob Dolson And John Buyses And further Westward Untill it Comes on the Road Laid Out from George Elsworth's Mill Leading toward poghkeepsinck…."

53. Engeltje Buckhout 136 was born about 1721 in Bushwyck, Kings Co., NY, United States.

Engeltje married James Gleane, son of Anthony Gleane 11 and Susanah Pieters,273 on 20 Feb 1743 in Fishkill, Dutchess Co., NY, United States.274 James was born about 1718275 and died on 15 Aug 1793 in Pittstown, Rensselaer Co., NY, United States275 aged about 75. Another name for James was James Glean.

Marriage Notes: James and Engeltje were married at the Fishkill First Reformed Church in Fishkill, Dutchess Co., NY as evidenced by this entry in the church records:

"[item] # 62: 1743 Feb 20: Jaems Glen, j.m., Engeltje Boechout, j.d."

It is interesting to note that James and Engeltje were cousins of a sort (James' mother, Susannah, and Engeltje's father, Johannes, being half siblings) when they married.

Noted events in their marriage were:

• Marriage Location: First Reformed Church, 20 Feb 1743, Fishkill, Dutchess Co., NY, United States. 274

General Notes: James Gleen [sic] is found in the Tax Assessments records for Rumbout Precinct, Dutchess Co., NY for the years 1742/3 and 1743/4. He is living near John Bookhout, William Barnes and John Concklin.

I do hereby Certify that Isaac Roods Confessed Judgment before me for Six pounds damages with Costs of Suit in the above Action this 22nd of April 1746. -- Ira Tilfim" [? unclear judge's name]

Then, there is an absence from the Tax Assessment records until James reappears in Poughkeepsie in 1753, living adjacent to his brother-in-law Adrian Van Ende, and remains there until at least Feb. 1762:

"Feb. 1753 Poughkeepsie Precinct

In Anthony Glean's Revolutionary War Pension File (#S23657), he recalls "...the crew went into winter quarters [from mid-November 1777]; applicant [Anthony Glean] and Capt. Lewis staid [sic] all winter at the applicant's father's home in Pleasant Valley, Dutchess County."

James' obituary appeared in "The Diary" or "Loudon's Register," New York City, on Wed. evening, Sept. 4, 1793, Issue 488, p. 3:

"DIED, at Pitts-Town, state of New York, on the 15th ult. in the 76th year of his age, James Glean, Senior - A man much esteemed as a good citizen; he resided for many years in this city previous to the late war with Great-Britain; was a warm friend to the cause of liberty; and it may be justly said he died an honest man - had many friends and few enemies."

Noted events in his life were:

General Notes: Peter appears in the records of the First Congregational Church at Huntington, Long Island, NY as follows:

"1741 Aug 23 Peter Buckhourt"

Column heading "Males Baptised by E.P." This is in reference to records kept by the Rev. Ebenezer Prime. This is the same church where Peter's parents were married in 1737.

Peter is mentioned in his grandfather, James Chichester's will written Jan. 10, 1769 and proved Jan. 7, 1774 found in New York Co., NY, excerpt as follows:

"...I will and bequeath unto my Daughter Abigail Chichester and my Grandson Peter Buckhout all the Remainder of my personal Estate after the above Debts, Legacies and Expenses are paid to be equally divided between them and to their disposal..."

There is also a further change to his will, which replaces a legacy left to Granddaughter, Margaret Bennett, "...Notwithstanding what is above written my Will is that the thirty pounds above given to Margaret Bennet shall not be paid to her but shall be equally divided between my Daughter Abigail and Peter Buchout which I give to them and their heirs and assigns forever (Is Witness my hand and seal this twenty fourth day of July 1771 which I publish and pronounced to be an Alternation in my Estate ...)."

Peter left Long Island and is living in Wilton, Fairfield Co., CT by at least 1779 when he marries Sarah Lockwood "of Norwalk," recorded in the Wilton Congregational Church records. Their children, Betsey, Abigail and Jesse, are all born after 1780. Peter is enumerated in Fairfield Co., CT in the 1790 census, for Norwalk & Stamford, with one son < 16 yrs and "2 free white females" which are most likely his daughters. Peter married a second time to Susannah St. John in November of 1791. Sarah having passed away prior to this date.

In the 1800 Norwalk, Fairfield Co., CT census, the family consists of 1 male 10 < 16 yrs and 2 females 16 < 26 yrs, in addition to Peter and his wife (assuming she is female > 45 yrs). By 1810 the family is residing in Wilton and only Peter and his wife, Susannah, are indicated. Peter continues to reside in Wilton parish, Norwalk, Fairfield Co., CT until about 1818 when he and Susannah move to Walton, Roxbury Co., NY.

Various land records for both Wilton and Stamford in Fairfield Co., CT chronicle land purchases and sales made by Peter & Susannah.

On Nov. 10, 1806, Peter & Susannah Buckhout of Wilton sold three pieces of land to Caleb Hoyt for $ 475.00 as follows (source: Land Records, Wilton, Fairfield Co., CT, Book 1, p. 285):

"Know ye that Mr. Peter Buckhout & Susannah Buckhout his wife of Wilton for the consideration of four hundred & seventy five dollars received to our full satisfaction of Caleb Hoyt of Wilton aforesaid do give, grant, bargain, sell and confirm unto the said Caleb and to his heirs and assigns forever three certain pieces of land lying in Wilton One piece at honey hill in Quantity about three acres be the same more or less, and bounded North on land belonging to Edmund & Jessie Ogden, East on pirambulating [?] line between Wilton and Weston, South to bounds [?word] adjoining Matthew Marvin and West on highway. Susannah had previously purchased the land at honey hill from Matthew Marvin for $50. [Note: this instrument was dated Dec. 11, 1806 but recorded Dec. 1, 1806 - so the deed date is likely incorrect. It is in the land records on the page prior to the following transaction] (source: Land Records, Wilton, Fairfield Co., CT, Book 1, p. 284)

On Nov. 18, 1806, Ezra Waterbury of Stamford, Fairfield Co., CT sold to Peter Buckhout of the town of Wilton, 9 acres as follows (source: Land Records, Stamford, Fairfield Co., CT, Book O, p. 736):

"A FARM TO BE SOLD.

Being an undivided right or share of pretty good […] containing 250 acres, being the 4-5th of the (divided) [south?] half of lott No. 9 pleasantly situated in the town of New Paltz in Ulster County, Convenient to the meeting or three different societies; Likewise to mill and market, being about 40 Roods to a grist and saw-mill, and about one […] from two Public landings and stores (opposite Poughkeepsie) from whence sails two vessels to N. York.

Said farm would be suitable for a […] and miller, as there is a tolerable good mill […] on it on a middling stream near the house, or for a tanner and courier as there is a beautiful flat adjoining the brook suitable for the purpose, or for a Smith that would use a triphammer, said farm is well watered, and timbered with various kinds, which being near market makes it valuable and abundance might be spared, as there is a plenty of suitable stone to fence it; has two log houses, one very comfortable with 2 rooms and 2 fire places, and an excellent new oven and stone milk room, a new Cooper's shop and new English barn, covered with pine shingles, about 70 or 80 acres under improvement, cuts about 10 tons of the best of Swamp manure very easily drained, and convenient to draw. Likewise peaches, plums, currants, and apples sufficient this year to make upwards of 20 barrels of cider; the whole or a part will be sold.
